December 2019 Board Meeting

Already our last meeting of 2019! Please see the summary of discussion items below:

  • The Abundant Communities Committee has just hired our Neighbourhood Coordinator! Look for more information to come in early 2020. For more information on the Abundant Communities initiative, please see here.
  • Latest edition of the Community News went out, including information from our league. For a digital edition, click here.
  • Three buses of festive community members will take part in the 2nd Annual Christmas Lights Tour on December 13. Thank you to Crystal Boyde for organizing!
  • Join us on Sunday, December 15 from 2:00 – 5:00 for our 2nd Annual Merry Little Christmas Party. Free showing of The Polar Express with popcorn in the Main Hall, and a pub afternoon in the Family Centre. Please no drop-offs!
  • New Year’s events are quickly approaching. Check out our events page to find out more. A special thank you to DJ Curtis from Grindstone Productions for donating his time to DJ the dance on New Year’s Eve, and to Worry Free Plumbing & Heating for providing complimentary hot chocolate and popcorn at the New Year’s Day Wobbly Skate.
  • The outdoor rink is now OPEN! Join us weekends from 12:00 – 6:00 pm, and weekdays from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. For more information, click here.
  • Variety Show tickets are on sale now! Click here for more information. This is our 50th show, if you can believe it, so you won’t want to miss the fun!

November 2019 Meeting

Your Beverly Heights Community League Board met this week. Please see the updates below from our discussion.

  • Many of you have already noticed the new signage at the hall, denoting the Family Centre and Main Hall. Thank you to everyone involved getting this printed and up!
  • The Playground Revitalization Committee now has its Terms of Reference approved by all three supporting Boards. Next up will be moving into the fundraising phase and community engagement.
  • Thank you to the City of Edmonton for supporting our Abundant Communities initiative. We were grateful to receive a grant to get us up and running.
  • Again, we saw an increase in our membership numbers from this time last year. Many new faces are out at our programs!
  • We discussed methods of communication to the community – Community News, Facebook group, and website. Potential to explore the Communibee app (developed locally).
  • Check out the Events page for all the upcoming Christmas and New Years events. As we know the details for programs, they will be posted to the website.
  • It’s almost time to start flooding the rink! Once the ice is ready to go, we will post the hours here to the website.

50th Annual Variety Show

We’ve come a long way since our first Variety Show! What started as an idea for a fun way to raise funds in our community has turned into Edmonton’s longest-running community-based fundraiser. This year we are celebrating 50 years!

Our Planning Committee has been hard at work (basically since the end of the 49th show) on ideas and plans for 2020. We want you to be aware of a number of important upcoming dates:

  • Wednesday, November 27 at 7:00 pmVolunteer Recruitment Night. Join us to learn about the various volunteer roles and some exciting news about the show!
  • Sunday, December 1 – tickets go on sale! More details to come.

Our 2020 Show Dates have been announced. Doors open at 6:30, with everyone seated by 7:30.

Christmas at the Hall

Can’t believe it’s almost that time of year again? Neither can we! But we want you to mark your calendars for some upcoming events!

Saturday, November 23 from 10am – 4pm will be the 26th Annual Christmas Craft & Gift Show. Plan to join us for some shopping for that special person on your list (or for yourself)! Our vendor tables are sold out, and we are pleased to welcome many new vendors this year.

Plan to come hungry and enjoy a light lunch at our concession. This year we will be offering the following items: hamburgers, cheeseburgers, soup & a bun, chili & a bun, pulled pork on a bun, hot dogs, chili cheese dogs, cheese dogs, and chips/cookies.

Friday, December 13 – 2nd Annual Christmas Lights Tour

Join us as we take a bus tour to Candy Cane Lane and Castrol Raceway.

You must purchase tickets for this event. Tickets will be on sale Mondays and Wednesdays from November 4 – December 4 from 6:00 – 7:30, and Thursdays from 7:00 – 8:00 in the Family Centre at the Hall. Contact Crystal Boyde for more information at (780) 289-0995 or email membersbhcl@hotmail.com.

Details:

  • Meet in front of the Beverly Heights Community League by 5:45pm.
  • Board bus at 6:00pm. No latecomers will be admitted.
  • Tickets are $10 per person (no reduced price for children).
  • Tickets are limited and non-refundable.
  • You must notify if using a wheelchair or a stroller when purchasing tickets to ensure everyone can be accommodated.

Sunday, December 15 from 2:00 – 5:00 will be our 2nd Annual Merry Little Christmas Party!

Bring your blankets and pillows to enjoy The Polar Express in the Main Hall, with free popcorn. After the movie, you might just catch a visit with Santa Clause.

During the movie, we will be hosting a pub afternoon in the Family Centre. Alcoholic beverages are a separate cost.

We have some exciting things planned for New Year’s and will have new and ongoing programs for Winter 2020. Check back on our website for more information!

October 2019 Board Meeting

On October 8, your Community League Board met for its monthly meeting. Please see the highlights below:

  • We were pleased to welcome a representative from EPCOR Water to discuss the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant. Every resident should have received a notice in their mailbox with FAQ.
  • Our membership numbers have doubled as compared to this same time last year! What a way to start 2019/2020! We have seen a lot of new faces come out to our programs this fall. Welcome!
  • On October 16, our local beat officers joined us at the hall for a good discussion about crime prevention in the neighbourhood.
  • Lots of programs & events coming this fall. Please mark your calendars!
  • Almost time for skating season. Once it starts getting colder, we will begin making ice. Hours for the rink will be set once the ice is made.

September 2019 Board Meeting

Your Beverly Heights Community League Board met on September 10 for a full agenda of discussion items! Please see some of the highlights below.

  • A big thank you to the City of Edmonton, whose neighbourhood engagement funding will be supporting a number of community events this fall. The Beverly Heights Community League received grants for our Community League Day event and for our new fall programs (bellydancing, yoga, meditation). Thank you for supporting our community!
  • We approved budgets for the upcoming Christmas Craft Sale & Taste of Lebanon events.
  • We discussed the upcoming rink season (fingers crossed for good weather!)
  • We discussed a number of upcoming events (see more information below).

August 2019 Board Meeting

Your Beverly Heights Community League Board met this week for our August meeting. We didn’t meet in July for the Board to enjoy summer (although summer never did make it to Edmonton this year).

Updates:

  • We received our Operating Grant from the City of Edmonton. Each year, we submit a grant proposal to the City for assistance with our operating needs. Thank you, City of Edmonton, for supporting Community Leagues like ours!
  • Thank you to volunteers who removed an unused washroom from the rink building to allow for extra storage. Many hours went into this project, and getting ready for the winter season. Rink building looks fantastic!
  • Board discussed potential maintenance items to be addressed, such as the ageing furnaces in the main hall (over 50 years old).

Upcoming Important Dates:

We need volunteers for our Community League Day! Roles include set-up of tables and chairs, preparing food for the BBQ, tear down of tables & chairs to prepare for the dance, and clean up after the event. If you are able to volunteer, please phone Crystal Boyde at 780-289-0995.

Summer & Fall Programs

We have a lot going on at the hall over the upcoming months. This fall, we will be trying some new programming, and we look forward to your feedback. We aim to provide programs that fit the needs of our community. Fall Programs:

  • NEW – Meditation – Monday, September 16 – December 2 (no classes October 14 or November 11), 7:45 – 8:00, ages 16+, $50 for 10 weeks, $5 to drop in.
  • NEW – Belly Dancing – Monday, September 16 – December 2 (no classes October 14 or November 11), 6:30 – 7:30, ages 16+, $50 for 10 weeks, $5 to drop in.
  • NEW – Board Game Club – Sunday, October 6 – December 1 (no club on October 13, 1:00 – 2:00, ages 4-12, $1 to drop in.
  • Karate – Monday evenings, 3 levels offered, details through link.
  • Yoga – now on Wednesday nights with a NEW instructor, details through link.

Fall Events:

  • September 14 – Community League Day
  • September 21 – Taste of Germany
  • September 29 – Floden Park Clean-Up

Whew! As you can see, lots of new and exciting things on at the hall! Come out and join in the fun.

May 2019 Board Meeting

Just in time for our June Board Meeting are the highlights from our May Board Meeting! This was the first meeting with our new 2019/2020 Board.

  • Ann Nicolai presented on behalf of the Abundant Communities Initiative within Beverly Heights. We would like to grow on the momentum that started last summer. Ann requested the board discuss and decide upon the next steps for this initiative, specifically creating a part-time paid position for a Neighbourhood Connector.
  • The Board agreed to sponsor a hole at the 21st Annual Beverly Business Association Golf Tournament on June 14.
  • A proposal was put forward for consideration of an off-leash dog park in Beverly Heights. The Board has recently heard a number of complaints from residents in regards to dogs being off leash in Floden Park, and surrounding trails. The Board agreed to continue to pursue the options for an off-leash dog park.
  • Membership numbers have increased from last year!
  • The Board received a request from the Northeast Zone Sports Council regarding the Floden Park baseball diamond and batting cage. Our Rink Director will follow up to determine specifics surrounding request.
