An amazing weekend spent with community and neighbours!! 
The Beverly Gardening Group enjoyed a lovely and informative visit to the Muttart Conservatory this month. We timed our arrival perfectly with a tour of the Tropical Pyramid where our guide led us through the invitingly warm pathways of twining vines and lush foliage. It was so strange wandering there at night with the twinkling of tiny lights illuminating our voyage instead of the bright sun.
Of course, we had to visit Santa in the Feature Pyramid where we took the opportunity to inform him of our wish-lists. Unsurprisingly, our lists were very similar, consisting mostly of plants!

What a beautiful summer it's been!
I spent most of every day in my garden as I undertook a rather daunting renovation in the back yard seeking to create space for more shady trees and fruit-bearing shrubs. My pear tree was loaded and I got my first crop of haskap berries! My roses bloomed with abandon and managed to avoid a major aphid infestation. Overall, I'm quite satisfied with what's going on in my own yard, but let me tell you - I am far more impressed with what you all have been up to!
This summer was the first year of the Our Neighbourhood in Bloom program, EHS's replacement for the City's Front Yards in Bloom. Instead of a competition, we were all able to recognize any garden that spoke to us, whether from traditional standards or from the appeal of barely organized chaos.
It was a true success! We got nominations from all around Beverly and Rundle Heights and a group of us from the Beverly Heights Gardening Group had the privilege of delivering the recognition cards and yard signs supplied by the EHS. This is when the real magic of such programs kicked in...
We met so many fascinating fellow gardeners! Some have spent years puttering away in their yards and others have thrown themselves all in and made massive transformations over short periods of time.
There was one fellow who had a forest grotto in his back yard, so cool in the summer's heat. Another couple had a yard full of items they've repurposed as functional garden decor surrounded by full-grown perennials in wonderful variety.
We met an urban tobacco "farmer", a rose collector, a container/flower-arranging artist, and a fruit-forest orchardist. We admired everything from neatly kept pots filled with showy annuals to yards completely without lawn and instead filled with vegetables and pollinator gardens. People stepped out just to say hi and offer to fill our water bottles.
I have never felt more connected to the place I live than while on that walk in the sunshine with my good friends paying detailed attention to efforts of my neighbours to make our community a beautiful place.
You have all worked so hard and I appreciate every one of you. Thank you so much for making our neighbour bloom!
Edmonton’s Partners in Parks program is a parkland stewardship program that encourages residents to take an active role in caring for and enhancing public green spaces. By partnering with the City, volunteers help maintain local parks, gardens, and shared outdoor areas, ensuring they remain vibrant and welcoming for everyone to enjoy. The program fosters a sense of pride and connection among participants while contributing to the beauty and sustainability of our shared spaces. This past season, the Beverly Gardening Group dedicated many hours to weeding, planting, and refreshing the garden beds around the hall. Volunteers cleared out overgrown areas, added new perennials, and ensured that the existing plants were well cared for throughout the summer. This collective effort has transformed the space into a welcoming focal point for visitors and residents alike. As the gardening season winds down, the Beverly Gardening Group invites new members to join us. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or simply someone who enjoys spending time outdoors, your help and enthusiasm are always welcome. It’s a great way to meet neighbours, learn new skills, and contribute to the beauty of our community spaces. Come grow with us!

Shovels are in the ground for the new long term care homeOn July 16, several of us board members and many from the larger community attended the ground-breaking ceremony the site of the old Christian School (115AVE and 36ST). After many years as an empty field, the site is being turned into a long term care home by Park Place. The new building will have 264 beds, courtyards, social activities, and will provide over 260 jobs.
The project is a collaboration between Park Place and all three levels of government. Moving the first golden spade-fuls of soil were Al Jina, president of Park Place; Jason Nixon, Minister for Assisted Living and Social Services; Mayor Amarjeet Sohi; and Ashley Salvador, Councillor for Ward Métis.
Park Place has a 32 year history providing homes for seniors with varying care needs from independent living to complex healthcare requirements. They have 41 building totals with several in the Edmonton area. Beverly Heights Seniors Living will take the place of the existing Hardisty location.
The Beverly Heights and Beacon Heights Community Leagues are hosting a presentation and Q&A by Native Counselling Services of Alberta on June 16th at the Beverly Heights Community Hall
The NCSA is looking to acquire the Beverly Motel for the purposes of converting it to supportive transitional housing for unhoused people in our community. They focus on traditional Indigenous healing and partner with many organizations to guide residents towards employment and permanent housing.
Blake Jackman, the NSCA's Director for Housing, will be speaking accompanied by Jennifer Bryce.
In Blake's words:
"Our approach to recovery is not new, it is historic and deeply rooted in our values. Substance use, including alcohol, is not tolerated in our programs. We have clear and firm policies in place, and our team will provide 24-hour staffing to ensure these policies are upheld. Staff will complete regular rounds both within the site and around the perimeter in the surrounding community, maintaining safety and accountability at all times.
Our organization has a 55-year track record of delivering culturally grounded, respectful, and effective support services. We are proud of the policies, program structure, and staffing we’ve developed to ensure we remain strong partners in the communities we reside in.
As a community member myself in Rundle Heights, I understand firsthand the challenges our neighbourhoods are facing. This program is not being brought in to worsen these challenges, it is being developed to help address them. Our goal is to be part of the solution and to ensure our presence strengthens the community as a whole.

As many of us already know, the alley renewal project for Beverly Heights is ongoing. Reports coming in from neighbours have been generally positive with work progressing quick with relatively minimal disruption.
In our house, we are not looking forward to the construction noise and disruption, but it will all be worth it to have smooth, well-draining alleys in the end!

Construction Update - June 2025
The second year of Beverly Heights Alley Renewal construction is underway. Work will consist of removing the existing road structure, placing a new gravel base, conducting minor concrete replacement and installing new asphalt pavement.

For those who live in the 2024 construction areas, the outstanding road deficiency work is scheduled to start at the same time as this year’s construction.

As I reflect on the great day we had on Saturday September 16, 2023 at our annual Community League Day event, I am so grateful for so much! Rather than doing several Facebook Posts I thought a longer blog post is appropriate.
First – I am so thankful for this community who showed up to learn more about the league, visit the display tables, enjoy the free pasta dinner and show, and fellowship of other community league members. We didn’t count but estimate we had 250-275 attending this year! That was incredible!
Our displays were well attended! Thank you to our MP Blake Desjarlais and our MLA Peggy Wright for making time to greet our community and answer questions, and for bringing some swag and treats. WeCan Cooperative, the Edmonton Public Library, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services, the Girl Guides and Scouts and the Beverly Historical Society do great work in supporting our community and we are so thankful they could attend.
For the Beverly Heights Community League, thank you to Jim for sharing the word about the Beverly Active Senior’s Society (and later being a good sport on stage with the magician!!), Donna showcasing the programs and activities she is launching to keep you active and engaged, Sara with the Variety Show details, Chris and Noma handing out memberships and the free cups, and Shannon and Kyla talking about Abundant Community and the Community Safety and Wellbeing Project.

First I want to thank the volunteers who prepared your free pasta dinner! Cindy Lazarenko and Geof Lilge toiled in the kitchen from 4:30-8ish, and they are actually from Highlands and not Beverly! I’m especially honoured as Cindy is a chef and owned Culina Highlands 2007-2012ish (where Bodega is now) and is still creating amazing food with Culina! Other kitchen helpers include Quinn and Josh, two 16 year old Beverly boys (my son and his friend), who went over and above the call of duty washing all the dishes – they were the last to leave that night with water logged hands. Derek, Jackie, Edie, Heather and Alene also helped out with prep and keeping the kitchen running smoothly! We had some uncooked/unopened leftovers and have donated items to the Candora Society Free Lunch program.
We had more youth helping serve you your dinner! Brooklyn has volunteered many times at many events and is such a pleasure to work with, Sadie, Leah and Ben are new to volunteering with us and did an awesome job! Their mom, Robyn, sold 50/50 and drink tickets, along with Darcie – and our 50/50 winner took home $127.50.
Our youngest volunteer did 3 shifts (all with a name tag on his forehead) – set up, greeter, and clean up – thank you Isaiah and his mom Jamie for everything! Isaiah made sure the crayons were scattered around the tables and drew a few tic-tac-toe boards for inspiration.
Gina is another Highlands resident who came to lend a hand, we are so grateful for our volunteers and even more grateful when you come from another league! Shawny is also from outside Beverly but volunteered all night with us and helped with clean up the next day too. Jill was another server – one of the busiest jobs of the night!!
Our bartenders kept busy filling your free cups with pop all night, and serving the adult beverages. Peighton (my niece) and Alex (my son) were experts with the pop gun by the end of the night!
Sandy and Jamie helped with set up, all day at the event, and with clean up after! Chantel helped with set up, and came back to enjoy the party. Thank you to Chris, Sara and Riplea for joining me for the final clean up on Sunday. I also want to thank our Facilities Manager, Ashley, for offering to clean the floors and washrooms – she keeps the facility in amazing condition and we are so thankful she is part of our team!
Did you stay to watch the magician? He had the kids cheering, laughing, and participating in his tricks! Thank you to Magician Donovan Day for providing the entertainment to wrap up the evening.
Another exciting note – we were able to present May LeDrew with an Honourary Lifetime Membership to the Beverly Heights Community League. A long time resident and volunteer, May has supported the league and our events for many years and was nominated for this award. Our last volunteer appreciation event was before covid – we are looking forward to getting together again soon and accepting more nominations for Lifetime Members!
Engaging with you, the community, is such an uplifting experience and I am so grateful for the way you support our events, activities, and the league. Some couldn’t make it to Saturday’s event, we will be offering other opportunities to get your free membership and share the benefits of membership with you. I hope you added your email address to your membership card – we send out a monthly MailChimp newsletter with all the details of upcoming programs, events and activities, and share news on our Facebook group as well. We hope to keep you engaged and excited, and encourage you to attend the Annual General Meeting in April!

Together we make a strong community, a place we belong and a better place in which to live.
