November Board Meeting

Last night, your Beverly Heights Community League Board met for its November meeting. We had a lot to discuss and it ended up being a late night!

Upcoming Events & Programs:

  • 25th Annual Craft Show is happening Saturday, November 24! This year we have extended hours (10:00 – 4:00) to ensure you can find a gift for everyone on your list.
  • We hope to start making ice fairly soon, depending on the weather! Continue to check our website and our facebook page for our grand opening! If you have any skates and/or helmets to donate, please consider donating to the Community League. We are looking to get a stockpile of skates and helmets to offer free rentals to any Community League members.
  • Variety Show Wine & Cheese – December 4 at 7:00 pm. Want to participate as a volunteer for the Variety Show? We have all types of jobs available. Come find out where you could lend a hand!
  • Merry Little Christmas Party – December 9 from 2:00 – 5:00. Come join us for a Christmas movie in the Main Hall, or in the Family Centre for a drink! Santa will be visiting after the movie!
  • New Year’s Day Wobbly Skate – January 1, 2019 from 1:00 – 4:00. Join us for free hot chocolate and smores to ring in the New Year! Of course, this is pending weather, but we are hoping for a delightful day and potentially an annual event!
  • In January 2019, we will be pleased to offer a karate program for youth, families, and adults. Continue to check the website for more information.

A number of community meetings are happening this week:

  • Gold Bar Park Alliance – everyone is invited to attend the City of Edmonton’s Utility Council Meeting, Friday, November 16 @ 1:30 pm. This is an opportunity to voice any concerns you might have.
  • Rundle Heights Playground Redevelopment Committee – next meeting is November 19 at 7:00 pm at St. Jerome. There will be lots of opportunities to get involved in this multi-year project!
  • Yellowhead Expansion Q&A – Monday, November 19 at 7:00 pm at the Beverly Heights Community Hall. Ask any questions or voice any concerns!

As always, everyone is welcome to attend a Community League Board meeting. The next one will be held on December 11 at 6:30.

Beverly Heights Newsletter

The Beverly Heights Community League is proud to announce that we will be publishing our own quarterly newsletter. The newsletter will be emailed to our current membership list, as well as posted to the website. We have a number of recurring and new events happening over the next few months, so be sure to check the newsletter for more information.

We have heard feedback that not all households are receiving the Community News newspaper, which we have relied on for our main source of information. Any other ideas about how to best get the word out to the community? We look forward to hearing from you!

Newsletters will be posted here on the website!

Yellowhead Trail Freeway Conversion Program Q&A

Did you know Yellowhead Trail is changing? Depending on where you travel to out of our neighbourhood, this may impact you!

Yellowhead Trail is becoming a freeway. This means three lanes of free-flowing traffic in each direction. The target speed will be 80km/hr. To do this, current signalized intersections and access on or off Yellowhead Trail will need to be removed and two new interchanges will be built. Road users will exit and enter Yellowhead Trail at the nearest interchange or a new parallel service road.

A representative from the Yellowhead Trail Freeway Conversion Program would like to meet with our community to answer any questions and hear our concerns.

Please join us for an opportunity to have your voice heard! The event will be held on November 19 at 7:00 pm in the Family Centre of the Beverly Heights Community League.

October Board Meeting

Ever been curious about what happens at a Community League Board meeting? Our Executive and Directors each provide an update of their respective areas to the entire group. We discuss any ongoing or new issues, along with ideas for the future.

You may not know that all Beverly Heights Community League members are welcome to attend the meetings. They occur the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30 pm.

Here are some of the highlights of what was discussed at our October meeting:

  • Playground Revitalization Committee is working on its Terms of Reference and is looking to have those in place and approved by November. Check out our Groups & Committees page for more information on this committee.
  • Due to concerns raised surrounding the proposed expansion of the South Edmonton Sanitary Sewer Line into the Gold Bar Treatment Plant, the Beverly Heights Community League voted to submit a letter to City Council requesting additional review and further public engagement. As a result, we have been invited to meet with City Council at their Utility Council meeting on October 25. Our Civic Affairs Director, Chris Keeler, will be in attendance, and the public is welcome.
  • Our Main Hall and Family Centre Rental Policies have been updated, thanks to the work of our Rentals Subcommittee. Any rental contract signed on or after November 1, 2018 is subject to the new policies. Please check the website for updates policies and rates.
  • 25th Annual Christmas Craft & Gift Show is coming up on Saturday, November 24 from 10:00 – 4:00. Yes, it’s the Grey Cup weekend, which means you can get some shopping done before the game! There are a few tables left, so if you are interested in a table, please email volunteer.bhcl@gmail.com. Do you have time to spare to volunteer at the event? Please click here and sign up!
  • Walk Your Block! Our Neighbourhood Watch Director encourages all of us in the community to walk your block. This is an initiative designed to prevent crime before it happens in our neighbourhood.
  • 49th Annual Variety Show will kick off its volunteer recruitment with a wine and cheese event on December 4 at 7:00 pm. We need lots of volunteers to continue to make this event a success.
  • Inaugural Meeting of the Beverly Ladies Society will be held on October 24 starting at 6:30. Come join us for goodies and coffee and to meet other ladies in the community. Not too sure what a ladies society is? Be part of it from the beginning and help make it something special.

Successful Community League Day

Saturday, September 16 marked Community League Day at community leagues across Edmonton. This year’s event at Beverly Heights had a BBQ (luckily an indoor BBQ, considering the weather), followed by a showing of Incredibles 2 in the Main Hall and a pub night in the Family Centre. Between all the events we had over 300 people attend and enjoy the festivities.

Many attendees purchased a vintage Beverly Heights sports jersey, which we are looking forward to seeing out and about in the community. We still have lots of sizes available, so please let us know if you also want to show your community pride!

A huge thank you to our community sponsors for the swag bags, plus the City of Edmonton Neighbourhood Services for sponsoring the movie, popcorn, and refreshments. Of course, an event this size could not be accomplished without the help of our volunteers! Thank you, all, for your time and dedication to our community!

We look forward to hearing your thoughts on this event and what you would like to see for future league events.

2018 Community League Day

We are very excited to announce our 2018 Community League Day on Saturday, September 15. BBQ activities from 4-6pm; Family Movie Night featuring “Incredibles 2” from 6:30-9pm.

You can also get your membership or purchase a jersey to show your Beverly Pride! First 150 families/individuals get a free reusable folding tote bag as well! Hope to see you there!

We need volunteers to help make this event run smoothly! Please consider signing up for a shift to help out at the event and to meet your neighbours. You can see what shifts are still needed by clicking on this link.

Welcome to the Web!

Welcome to the Web!

The Beverly Heights Community League Board is proud to introduce our new website! After much discussion at our previous board meetings, we decided to invest the time to launch our presence on the web.

We hope this new website will encourage more use of our newly renovated rental spaces, and provide an opportunity for our residents to be more informed of the activities and events in the community.

We look forward to hearing your thoughts on the website! Please feel free to join the conversation below in the comments section.
